As the first visages of autumn make an appearance in the form of cooler breezes, the Wooden Duck is preparing for the fall season.

The Endless Summer is all about transition, and here at the Wooden Duck we have the styles that will take you from late summer into early fall. Jane Berger, owner of the Wooden Duck, explains that “many customers have a difficult time with this transition season.” She goes on to say “they are not quite ready to pack away those frilly sleeveless tops and tank tops, but not quite ready to pull out the turtlenecks, sweaters and corduroys”.

Byers’ Choice 2010 Mid-Year Carolers

Wow, that’s the one word to describe the new 2010 Mid-Year Byers’ Choice Carolers. There are 4 new Carolers, each of which is unique in design and colors.

: “Ice Princess”

Our favorite is the Ice Princess (shown on the left). She is attired in a blue velvet gown trimmed with silver lace and silver stars. On her head is a gold tiara and she is carrying a crystal scepter befitting royalty. The Polar Bear Club (sold separately) is the perfect accessory to accompany the “Ice Princess”.

"Virginia"

Virginia O’Hanlon (shown on the right) wrote a letter to the editor of the New York Sun on whether or not there is a Santa Claus. The response from veteran newspaper man Francis Church in 1897 has since become the most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies and other editorials, on posters and stamps. Elegant and regal in stature, the Old English Santa is a must for those of you that collect Byers’ Choice santas. Our Old English Santa carries a brass lantern to help guide his way this Yuletide season. The “Leather Horse” can be purchased separately.

2010 Harvest Man and Woman

Just in time for your Fall decorating, the 2010 Harvest Man and Woman is the perfect addition to your Fall Byers Choice display. The Wooden Duck is excited to offer these Carolers to our customers, pre-orders need to be received no later than September 5th, 2010. The Wooden Duck will complete the necessary paperwork to send to the Byers’ Choice factory to secure the Carolers for you.

Shipping for these Carolers will occur in early October, 2010. Please, if you pre-order these Carolers, do so on a separate order from other Carolers.

ESC Trading Company is a family business with a simple and effective company philosophy: they license designs from independent artists, reproduce those designs with meticulous quality and detail, market the products nationwide, and distribute them from their warehouse in Columbus, Ohio.

Each licensed artist has been producing his or her designs by hand for many years, but each has chosen to license through us because they would rather be full-time artists than part-time product managers, accountants, and sales mangers.

Patience Brewster

When Patience Brewster decided to switch careers mid-stream, the rest of us were rewarded with the most intriguing bunch of Christmas characters this side of a Tim Burton movie. Moon fairies, cactus cowboys, alligators in high heels … these are the Christmas imaginings of Brewster, who grew up in the oh, so traditional town of Plymouth, Massachusetts. Six years ago, this award-winning illustrator (known for such children’s books as The Merbaby and Too Many Puppies) decided to try her hand at something new. Today, from her studio in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, Brewster sketches the whimsical characters that are later brought to life as ornaments, candle holders, tree toppers and display figures … all with a twist. Brewster’s flair for color and style are apparent. Crisp, luminous colors bring her pieces to life, while light, wispy trims like feathers and gossamer fine fringe give her creations a lighter-than-air feeling. “I like levity,” explains Brewster. “Not just the levity that exists in humor, but in things that tread lightly on this earth. The Hearts and Ivy Collection is meticulously handcrafted in Minneapolis, MN by designer Donna Hamilton (pictured on the left) and a team of 25 women. Working out of a neighorhood studio surrounded by flower gardens, Donna creates her distinctive and charming santas, snowmen and angels from designer fabrics and carefully selected accessories. The Hearts and Ivy Collection began in 1993 with a single angel and now includes over 70 ornament styles designed to add a touch of magic to the holiday season.

Michelle Allen, the designer behind “Allen Designs Studio”, loves the imperfect, slightly eccentric, witty quality of the world around us.
